Magick by Intention: Protection

Protection Magick, judging by the index of Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magickal Herbs (as I do on regular occasion), shows Protection to be THE biggest magickal concern by the sheer number of plants that have been wielded to defend Self, children, kin, home, property, beasts, crops, and the wide open landscape.

Where once we sought protection from beasts and the crueler aspects of Nature, we now more often seek protection from other humans, from the ravages of war and from the criminal element of our civilized lives. Ingredients of many protection potions will mostly draw from the Elemental power of Fire and Earth, and from the Sun and Mars Planetary power. Many will have a strong, pungent scent and tend to activate the mind and awareness of our surroundings.

Magick by Intention: Love, Lust and Friendship Magick

Love Magick is said to be the most difficult of all - but nevertheless, it is the type of magick most tried by beginners! Love magick is complicated, because it involves the Will of another person, and depends on our own Love for the Self. I often warn Practitioners to avoid love magick that targets another specific individual (and that is what most of the spells out there attempt to do!). Targeting a specific person to make them fall in love with you is a violation of that person's Free Will, not a very respectful or healthy way to begin a relationship, right??! My recommendations for real love are to work on Self Love and general attraction, opening yourself to love, and becoming your True Self.

Love Magick is a broad category of workings that includes a range from platonic Friendship, Attraction, True Love, and Compatibility to Hot Sex and Get Laid formulations. My other main recommendation is to be careful (and very specific) what you ask for!

Feelings of being wronged, desperation and powerlessness, and the sense of justice miscarried will turn the staunchest agnostic to metaphysical remedies. Whether we are unjustly accused, the victims of a crime, guilty as sin, or just going into business, most of us will have to reckon with the legal system over the course of our lives. Magick by Intention: Happiness Magick

Happiness Magick! The right to the Pursuit of Happiness is a Western value which we hold very dear, dear enough to guarantee it in the US Constitution. But if you look at the amount of antidepressant drugs we consume, it would appear we are pursuing other goals. Wealth, fame, prestige, sometimes even just the struggle for survival eclipse our seeking happiness.

The primary Element of Happiness is Air, and the Planets devoted to Happiness are the Sun and Venus. This suggests that one big step towards enjoyment of life is the step out the front door! Magick by Type: Elemental Magick

ELEMENTAL MAGICK is a basic tier of magickal correspondence to the Western Tradition. All things on Earth, and all magickal goals can be categorized as a function of the powers of Air, Fire, Water, Earth (the cardinal elements which correspond to the Four Directions, and sometimes to Spirit alone, the Fifth Sacred Thing, which is composed of and at the same time the origin of the Four.

In other words, any type of magick you might endeavor can be accomplished with one or a combination of the basic Elements, and all potions made in the Natural Magick tradition take into account the Elemental powers of each ingredient.

The Air element is the principle of wind, speech, thought, ideas, self-discipline, and joy, and Air oil or incense could be used to magickally evoke any of these powers, or to mark the Eastern corner of a Temple. The Fire element is the principle of heat, passion, activity, work, and desire, so Fire oil or incense could be used for any of these types of workings, or to summon the Southern Watchtower. The Water element is the principle of emotions, psychism, compassion, peace, healing, and dreams in the West, and Earth element is the principle of physicality, wealth, growth, grounding, mysteries, and secrets of the North. The Spirit element is the principle of connection, magick, change, transformation and Divinity, and is seen as existing as the Center of the magick Circle, as the Circle itself, and as the Multiverse beyond the Sacred Circle.

Elemental oils and incenses are often used in a ritual setting is for the calling of the Four (or Five) Directions, Guardians, Watchtowers, or however they are called in your tradition. The oils can be used to anoint candles which mark each of the directions, or the incense can be burned to emphasize each direction as it it summoned.

Magick by Intention: Creativity and Inspiration Magick

Creativity and Inspiration are ever sought by all of us as artists in Life. Whether we create by painting, giving birth, dancing, or serving on a civic board, most of this Life is in a state of sacred Change, and we are its agents.

All elements are involved with creation by necessity! But the Practitioner is generally understood to have the Earth element to hand, and so most magicks of Creativity will bring the Air, Fire and Water into the endeavor. Air for ideas, Fire for the work to be done, and Water for the Well of Inspiration. Certain deities are allied with the spirit of creation, including Earth Mother goddesses like Gaia, and the Star Goddesses and Brigid of the Forge and Flame. Iris of the Rainbow especially is able to bring the elements of Air, Fire and Water together to create the palette for the Artist to create from.

Magick by Intention: Blessing and Sanctification

BLESSING, SANCTIFICATION, CHURCH AND TEMPLE MAGICK are done because we wish to live in a state of Oneness with the Divine. In this place of serenity and higher vibrations we are our best, our true selves, more receptive to the beneficence and communication of our Guardian Angels and Gods.

We all have the power to bless and sanctify ourselves, other living beings, objects and our surroundings. Potions and tools will often partake of the energies of Water, Air, Stars, Angels, Deities, and the Crown Chakra. The Sun and the Moon are also helpful for blessings. The Faeries have been known to dispense a blessing or two as well!

Potions that have properties of sanctification will in general smell very sweet and pure. They should set your mind at ease and make everything harmonious.

Magick by Intention: Banishing, Uncrossing and Exorcism Magick

Banishing and Exorcism magick, the need to get it gone! Any competent practitioner will find occasion to perform these operations from time to time. Banishing and exorcism are more powerful forms of purification and cleansing, used to rid ourselves of especially unwelcome "house guests" and malevolent energies, thoughtforms, spirits, even people. Sometimes we just need to exorcise our own bad attitudes as well. Banishing and Exorcism can be done by Force of Will alone, but it does help to have potions to help, because I don't know about you, but sometimes I can just tend to be too nice to do the job on my own.

Almost all these formulations depend on the Elemental power of Fire and the Planetary power of Sun or warlike Mars. Most are made during the Waning or Dark Moon, and it is believed that the last quarter of the Moon is the most effective time for banishings. Almost all of them will also have a bad smell, or at least be off-putting. I remember having a conversation with a customer who was having trouble with a poltergeist. "I tried using some Jasmime oil, but it didn't seem to work," she bemoaned. "I don't think I would use Jasmine for banishing a poltergeist," I started. Another customer leaned into the conversation and said, "Girl you just told that spirit that you like it a lot and you hope it stays!"

Magick by Intention: Astral Travel, Prophesy and Psychic Magick

Astral Travel, prophesy and Psychic Magick are similar workings. This sort of magick works on the premise that our consciousness is not limited to the perception of our flesh-and-blood bodies incarnate on Earth only, and that we are part of the Whole Being, One Knowing, or whatever we may call it according to culture or spiritual tradition. From the genesis sometimes called the Big Bang, and otherwise known as the Time Continuum, it is the understanding that we have access to knowledge of all Time and Space, since we are of course Children of Both.

In other words, if we lack Talent, we may avail ourselves of Will, Instruction and Resource. If we have Talent, our achievements will be benefited Instruction and Will, even if Resources are lacking. Or any other combination of Circumstance, so long as Will is available for the undertaking.
